MISIA is one of the most popular and influential female singer in Japan. Since her debut in 1998 with her single “Tsutsumikomu Youni…”, she has been highly acclaimed for her powerful voice with 5 octave range. Her work has been genre-straddling and the total number of CD sold has hit 30 million so far.
Her marvelous performance is highly appreciated from oversea as well and in 2008, she accomplished an arena concert tour in 13 cities in Asia.
Recently she has shown great commitment to social action and has been supporting the activities of Child AFRICA, the organization which promotes better educational environment for children in Africa. From July 2009, MISIA starts her acoustic live concert tour, ‘MISIA Hoshizorano live(MISIA live under the starlit sky)’ which will boast the largest number of performance of all the tours she had so far.

He is known for his unique music style which combines Senegalese traditional music with various types of music such as ethnic or Western pop music. His consistent and active involvement with social problems is very influential not only among music industries but also in the wider society. He has been actively engaged in social actions by composing works which convey messages addressing societal matters, participating in charity events such as LIVE8 and carrying out activities as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, etc. He is highly praised as a ‘singing journalist’ because of his active involvement with social issues through music as a today's griot.
